Herpes itself can be considered to be a group or family of viruses. This group actually contains eight viruses that are known to affect people. While there are eight viruses capable of affecting people, for the purposes of this book, only the HHV1 (HSV1) and HHV2 (HSV2) are those that are really of interest to what this book pertains to. In order to simplify matters, the Herpes Type One is best known for causing sores that appear around the lips and mouth of a person.

These are sometimes referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. While Type One can cause genital herpes, most cases that are genital herpes are actually caused by Herpes Type Two.
